According to GameStop reports, pre-sales of Treyarch's Cold War-era shooter, "Call of Duty: Black Ops," - the seventh major release in the "Call of Duty" first-person combat game series - are apparently outpacing the figures recorded by its predecessor, Modern Warfare 2. Achieving an enviable single-day sales feat of a whopping $401 million in sales, from 4.7 million copies sold on November 10 last year, Modern Warfare 2 holds the single-day record for any entertainment medium.
Referring to "Black Ops", GameStop's Bob McKenzie said: "I think were going to have a very good launch." In one of GameStop's biggest midnight launch events ever, 4,400 stores were open to sell the title; with over 700 Best Buy stores open as well, showing the game on 3-D TVs.
While the earlier games in the Call of Duty franchise - which has, in all, accounted for over $4 billion in sales thus far - have had either World War II or the present times as their setting, the Black Ops story takes place during the Cold War, and features fighting scenes in Cuba, Russia and Vietnam. The game's plot chiefly plays out in flashbacks in the mind of special forces operative Alex Mason.
With the addition of cinematic substance by Hollywood celebrities, and some classic 1960s soundtrack, being the other attractions of Black Ops, EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich remarked: "Black Ops will be the largest entertainment launch of 2010. The developer, Treyarch, has put its heart and soul into this title."
