TOPIC: Get rid of the lag spikes in games with Windows 7

Get rid of the lag spikes in games with Windows 7 1 year, 6 months ago #1050

After i started to lag some in Heroes of Newerth, constantly small lag spikes even when my ping and fps was good. I googled the problem.

The problem is Windows 7 and online games, Microsoft is working on a patch release to solve this issues. What you can do manually now if you experience lag in online games with an excellent computer, do the following thing:

Leave the multimedia class scheduler service running, but disable its network throttling "feature":

* Open regedit
* Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Multimedia\SystemProfile
* There will be an entry for network performance throttling, default value is 10; set it to FFFFFFFF hex (willl look like 0xFFFFFFFF to the right of the entry)
* Reboot

This solution worked perfect for me, and all lag gone on HoN... I will also try COD:Black Ops later, cause i experienced small lag spikes there aswell... I tried the game on PAOK's pc yesterday (Windows XP) and the games runs smooth and no lag spikes at all...

You can read more about this on se7enforums or microsoft windows 7 forums.

Games affected:
Source Engine Games (Team Fortress 2 (TF2), Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, Counter Strike Source (CS:S, CSS))
Heroes of Newerth (HoN)
Call of Duty Series (CoD), possibly including Modern Warfare
Overlord Series (Overlord, Overlord: Raising Hell, Overlord 2)

It didn't work for me, but thanks for the tip anyway..

What it did work (but not quite to 100%) after the last BO patch is to use the default CFG files (in case you altered them by using that config tool delete them - BO will create the default ones for you - don't forget to keep some backup of the old ones just in case); and in the Graphics settings enable Vsync, disable Shadows -the rest is up to you-, I did enable AA 2x to 16x and I had almost the same performance in FPS (lag spikes also the same); it seems BO is very CPU-dependent game (bad coding/porting from consoles)!
